Yet Another High-profile Denver Post Departure

In the newspaper game, being a polarizing figure is about as good as it gets. Having people love you and love to hate you means that just about everyone is reading you. And at the end of the day, that is what drives newspaper subscriptions. Which is why I was sad to see columnist Tina Griego today join past lightning rods Penny Parker and Mike Littwin as the most recent Denver Post staff members to leave the paper.

So how long can the Denver Post survive while jettisoning its most interesting, engaging, loved and hated personalities? Unfortunately, it looks like we’re going to find out.

Guttau Joins Four Seasons Vail as Director of PR

Congratulations to Jim Guttau, who has joined Four Seasons Resort Vail as Director of Public Relations. Jim has spent the past seven years as the principal of Guttau PR, a boutique firm focused on clients in the hospitality, nonprofit, and lifestyle sector.

Previously, Dana Lauren Berry has split her attention between the Vail resort and the Four Seasons Hotel in Denver. She will now handle public relations exclusively for the hotel in Denver.

Linhart, Pure Brand Big Winners at PRSA Gold Picks

If you see Sharon Linhart and Larry Holdren at the Capital Grille today smoking cigars, swilling scotch and generally cackling like they own the town, well, actually that’s just a typical Friday for the two of them. But there’d also be another reason: their firms were the big agency winners at last night’s PRSA Colorado Gold Pick Awards.

Using the proprietary and highly sophisticated Denver PR Blog formula to determine which agencies fared best (four points for the Grand Gold Pick, two points for a gold, one point for a silver), the results are:

1. Linhart PR (16 points) – One grand gold, five gold, two silver
2. Pure Brand (15 points) – Four gold, seven silver
3. Webb PR (8 points) – Three gold, two silver
4. GroundFloor Media (4 points) – Two gold
5. Downing Street (3 points) – One gold, one silver
6. Communications Infrastructure Group (2 points) – One gold
6. Communications Strategy Group (2 points) – One gold
6. Philosophy (2 points) – Two silver
9. JDK & Co. (1 point) – One silver

And the big non-agency winners were:

1. Pinnacol Assurance (7 points) – Three gold, one silver
2. Farm Credit (5 points) – Two gold, one silver
2. Kaiser Permanente (5 points) – One gold, three silver
4. Colorado State University (4 points) – Two gold

And, finally, congratulations to the Special Award winners:

• JKD & Co.’s Jane Dvorak (Swede Johnson Lifetime Achievement Award)
• Rocky Mountain Arsenal: Charlie Scharmann/U.S. Army, Roger Shakely/Shell Oil Co. and Steve Berendzen/U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (Business People of the Year)
• Margaret Fogarty/Farm Credit and Carey Madsen/InView Communications (PR Team of the Year)
• EnCana’s Bridget Ford (Chapter Service Award)
• Linhart PR’s Ashley Frost (Joe Fuentes Rookie of the Year Award)

Great Moments in Denial

The Denver Post takes a pretty damn rosy view of its circulation numbers for a paper about to lay off two-thirds of its copyediting staff. The Post’s own 14-paragraph article reports the changes in the paper’s website hits, its online e-version, and its Facebook and Twitter followers, bit conspicuously absent are any numbers about the paper’s print circulation change. And given that advertisers typically pay a newspaper’s bills, that is an ominous sign.

The paper reported 250,200 print subscribers for the period ending March 31, which appears to be about a 25 percent drop from a year ago. But it also reported 150,000 digital subscribers. As usual, I’m waiting for Mark Harden at the Denver Business Journal or Michael Roberts at Westword to connect to connect the dots.

CPR’s Verlee, Markus Win Local, Regional & National Awards

A shout out to Colorado Public Radio reporter Megan Verlee, who picked up a regional Edward R. Murrow Award for best use of sound for her piece “Getting Hands-On at Colorado Gators.” And also to her CPR colleague Ben Markus, who picked up two awards for his piece “Local Firefighters Honor 9/11 First Responders:” a Colorado Broadcaster Association Award for best single event news coverage and a third-place award in the category for breaking news or continuing coverage from the National Headliner Awards.

Traction’s Hamling Settles Suit with State Prosecutors

Traction Communications founder Kirsten Hamling has settled a lawsuit filed against her by Colorado state prosecutors. The suit accused Hamling of diverting money intended for charity through her Fired Up for Kids organization and spending the “money on personal items including services at hair and nail salons, a gym membership and a vacation.”

Under the terms of the deal, Hamling has agreed that Fired Up For Kids will “move all its assets to Colorado Firefighter Calendar Inc., an unrelated non-profit company,” according to David Migoya at The Denver Post. The article notes that Hamling has not “admitted any wrongdoing in agreeing to the settlement” and that her attorneys maintain that she simply was owner of a for-profit business who “graciously donated money” to charity.

7News, however, has reported that Hamling’s organization registered with the Colorado Secretary of State’s office as a non-profit and that its website and news releases claimed that “all calendar proceeds benefit” charity.

Whatever Happened to …

Since it is Friday afternoon, and I am distracted by how I am going to spend my $500 million lottery jackpot, I thought I’d throw an easy, feel-good story out there: Former Colorado Public Radio media relations manager Lana Taussig is profiled in a Nashville Business Journal Q&A piece. I don’t subscribe, so I can only see the first two answers, but I assume that she goes on to say that Nashville pales in comparison to Denver and that of everything she left behind she misses the Denver PR Blog most.

SE2, Artemis Big PR Winners in Pinnacol ‘Push to Privatize’

Ed Sealover at the Denver Business Journal has crunched the numbers on Pinnacol Assurance’s “pricey push to privatize,” and the big public relations winners in the effort are:

SE2 – $119,126 in fees
Artemis Communications – $77,725 in fees
Rockford Gray – $58,438 in fees
Galloway Group – $23,600 in fees

Of course, law firms billed nearly $1.5 million, so “big winners” is more of a relative term.

The agency currently occupies about 10,000 square feet on the buildings’s second floor, and the new lease adds another roughly 8,000 square feet on the third floor. Linhart said the expansion was necessary due to growing client needs and continued staff additions.

Westword Questions 9News’ Journalistic Integrity on Dyer Dog Video

A day after 9News anchor Kyle Dyer was attacked on-camera by a dog, Michael Roberts at Westword contemplates the journalistic integrity of 9News’s decision not to allow anyone – even its own NBC Today Show – to air the clip because it “has been traumatizing for staff members.” Roberts rightly questions whether 9News applies that same standard to individuals not affiliated with the station:

“… Many items shown by TV stations on news broadcasts are traumatizing for the friends and family of the people involved. Think of the late January hit-and-run for which Taylor Jo Mathis was arrested. In that case, 9News and many other outlets in town ran surveillance footage of the car striking two people, with one sent airborne by the impact.”
