#TriathlonFail
The Denver Triathlon has been postponed until September due to a lack of entrants. And, judging by the communications from the organizers, the postponement likely is step one (with step two being the official cancellation later this summer):
“Hi everyone, I sort of ignored FB yesterday to make sure I replied to everyone’s emails. If you have any specific questions I want to answer them. In an effort to be transparent, I had to postpone this race as we almost had more police officers working than we had registrants. After a wonderfully reviewed race last year we have seen a major drop in registration to the point that it was cancel or postpone. We had to chose one or the other and while it isn’t fun for anyone we didn’t want to cancel.”

Why Bronco Eric Decker Shouldn’t Have a Reality Show
Just because someone will let you have a reality show doesn’t mean you should do it. Swimmer Ryan Lochte could make millions if he stayed out of the spotlight except for carefully controlled advertising opportunities. Instead, he’s turning himself into a punchline (but probably still making millions).
And if you haven’t seen this Saturday Night Live Weekend Update segment featuring Seth McFarlane as Lochte, it’s worth the three minutes.

Free Advice for the University of Denver’s A.D.
You fired two-time national champion hockey coach George Gwozdecky two weeks ago, and you have refused to discuss the decision with media. Now, reports are that you have narrowed your search to four finalists for the position.
Here’s some free advice: Hiding from the media is an amateur mistake. Sit down with them before you hire your next coach to explain why you fired Gwozdecky. Otherwise, your press conference to introduce the new coach will turn into a circus and all the media coverage will focus on the firing rather than the hiring.
You are the athletic director at a major university. Start acting like it.

Free PR Tip
Here’s a lesson for aspiring PR professionals that they don’t teach you in college: Don’t send confidential emails to public officials who are subject to open-records requests (or this might happen). And maybe think twice about using an attorney who doesn’t already understand this.
PR Debacle of the Day
Last December, Rutgers University officials – including its President and Athletic Director – watched this video of its head basketball coach verbally and physically abusing players and thought a three-game suspension and fine was appropriate punishment.
Now, the world has seen it, and it is only a matter of time before Rutgers fires the coach. The question is how long they will allow their brand to twist in the wind before they finally do it. Free PR tip: quicker is better.
UPDATE: Rutgers made the classic public relations mistake of only dealing with part of the issue when it fired the coach on Wednesday morning. Had Rutgers also fired the athletic director who knew about the abuses months ago and did little, it would have dealt with the issue in one swift moment. Instead, the attention will now turn to the athletic director instead of simply dissipating.
UPDATE II: It took 24 hours for Rutgers to fire the coach, and an additional two days for the athletic director to “resign.”

#5 Should Be That Some Men Currently in PR Are Morons
Arik Hanson offers four reasons there aren’t more men in public relations:
1. Men think there is more money in other professions – “Unlike many women (sorry, blanket statement), men are driven by money and power.”
2. PR is not a “manly” profession – “Guys see how PR is portrayed in the media. They watch movies that show women working in PR.”
3. Men don’t understand PR – “Accounting, law, engineering, and financial services are industries that, on the surface, are easier to understand. Therefore, more men seek them out.”
4. There’s a generational issue at play – “Sons grow up watching their fathers. Many fathers work in industries like finance, engineering, construction and the like.”
