#TriathlonFail

The Denver Triathlon has been postponed until September due to a lack of entrants. And, judging by the communications from the organizers, the postponement likely is step one (with step two being the official cancellation later this summer):

“Hi everyone, I sort of ignored FB yesterday to make sure I replied to everyone’s emails. If you have any specific questions I want to answer them. In an effort to be transparent, I had to postpone this race as we almost had more police officers working than we had registrants. After a wonderfully reviewed race last year we have seen a major drop in registration to the point that it was cancel or postpone. We had to chose one or the other and while it isn’t fun for anyone we didn’t want to cancel.”

Linhart, Philosophy Big Winners at 2013 PRSA Gold Pick Awards

What does Sharon Linhart call it when you pick up a half-dozen wins at PRSA Colorado’s Gold Pick awards? An off-night.

Linhart PR and Philosophy Communication were the big agency winners at last night’s awards event. Using the proprietary and highly sophisticated Denver PR Blog formula to determine which agencies fared best (four points for the Grand Gold Pick, two points for a gold, one point for a silver), the results are:

2. Philosophy Communication (11 points) – Five gold, one silver
3. Pure Brand (7 points) – Three gold, one silver
4. JKD! & Co. (4 points) – Two gold
5. CSG | PR (3 points) – One gold, one silver
5. MGA (3 points) – One gold, one silver
7. Weber Shandwick (1 point) – One silver

Why Bronco Eric Decker Shouldn’t Have a Reality Show

Just because someone will let you have a reality show doesn’t mean you should do it. Swimmer Ryan Lochte could make millions if he stayed out of the spotlight except for carefully controlled advertising opportunities. Instead, he’s turning himself into a punchline (but probably still making millions).

And if you haven’t seen this Saturday Night Live Weekend Update segment featuring Seth McFarlane as Lochte, it’s worth the three minutes.

Free Advice for the University of Denver’s A.D.

You fired two-time national champion hockey coach George Gwozdecky two weeks ago, and you have refused to discuss the decision with media. Now, reports are that you have narrowed your search to four finalists for the position.

Here’s some free advice: Hiding from the media is an amateur mistake. Sit down with them before you hire your next coach to explain why you fired Gwozdecky. Otherwise, your press conference to introduce the new coach will turn into a circus and all the media coverage will focus on the firing rather than the hiring.

You are the athletic director at a major university. Start acting like it.

Destination Hotels & Resorts Names PR/SM Manager

Englewood-based Destination Hotels & Resorts has appointed Carrie Mosner public relations and social media manager. Free PR Tip

Here’s a lesson for aspiring PR professionals that they don’t teach you in college: Don’t send confidential emails to public officials who are subject to open-records requests (or this might happen). And maybe think twice about using an attorney who doesn’t already understand this.

PR Debacle of the Day

Last December, Rutgers University officials – including its President and Athletic Director – watched this video of its head basketball coach verbally and physically abusing players and thought a three-game suspension and fine was appropriate punishment.

Now, the world has seen it, and it is only a matter of time before Rutgers fires the coach. The question is how long they will allow their brand to twist in the wind before they finally do it. Free PR tip: quicker is better.

UPDATE: Rutgers made the classic public relations mistake of only dealing with part of the issue when it fired the coach on Wednesday morning. Had Rutgers also fired the athletic director who knew about the abuses months ago and did little, it would have dealt with the issue in one swift moment. Instead, the attention will now turn to the athletic director instead of simply dissipating.

UPDATE II: It took 24 hours for Rutgers to fire the coach, and an additional two days for the athletic director to “resign.”

#5 Should Be That Some Men Currently in PR Are Morons

Arik Hanson offers four reasons there aren’t more men in public relations:

1. Men think there is more money in other professions – “Unlike many women (sorry, blanket statement), men are driven by money and power.”

2. PR is not a “manly” profession – “Guys see how PR is portrayed in the media. They watch movies that show women working in PR.”

3. Men don’t understand PR – “Accounting, law, engineering, and financial services are industries that, on the surface, are easier to understand. Therefore, more men seek them out.”

4. There’s a generational issue at play – “Sons grow up watching their fathers. Many fathers work in industries like finance, engineering, construction and the like.”

Chris Culliver’s Apology Translated

Actual Apology:

“The derogatory comments I made yesterday were a reflection of thoughts in my head, but they are not how I feel. It has taken me seeing them in print to realize that they are hurtful and ugly. Those discriminating feelings are truly not in my heart. Further, I apologize to those who I have hurt and offended, and I pledge to learn and grow from this experience.”

Translated:

“Holy shit! Apparently the NFL and/or the 49ers can suspend you from the Super Bowl if you rail against gay people at an NFL event while wearing an NFL jersey. That’s not cool. But my lawyer says I can avoid the suspension if I give the league something to work with, so, for the record and to the extent that it keeps me from being suspended, I am sorry. Is that good enough? If not, my lawyer can add some words I’ve never used in my life, like ‘derogatory,’ ‘reflection,’ ‘hurtful,’ and ‘discriminating.’ We good?”

The Economist: Dan Edelman was no ‘Mad Man’

The Economist reflects on the role Dan Edelman played in the rise of public relations in what was an advertising world:

Mr Edelman, who died on January 15th, aged 92, was a pioneer, introducing innovations that reflected his bigger vision of PR as a more effective way to market a company’s reputation and brands than its fancier (and costlier) big brother, advertising. … Nowadays, although public relations is hardly without its critics, Mr Edelman’s view of the merits of PR relative to advertising is much more widely shared, though never as enthusiastically as four decades ago, when Charlie Lubin, the founder of Sara Lee, said that thanks to Mr Edelman, his PR budget was worth 1,000 times more than his advertising budget. Those were the days.

Lance Armstrong is a Terrible Person

Lance Armstrong’s confession to Oprah Winfrey that he used performance-enhancing drugs will air tomorrow Thursday, and the speculation about what he said has become the media story of the day.Screen shot 2013-01-15 at 5.17.03 PM

The coverage is taking a lot of different angles, but there is at least one singular truth about his story: Lance is a terrible person. A tremendous athlete, but a terrible person. And not because he used PEDs, but because of how he tried to ruin anyone and everyone who dared to speak the truth.

Sometimes terrible people do good things, maybe even because they need to cover up the fact that they are terrible people. And those good things can offer enough cover that blind loyalists continue to believe. Richard Nixon created the EPA, Mussolini made the trains run on time, and Lance created the Livestrong Foundation.

But I don’t think for a second he founded his foundation because he truly cared about his fellow man. Lance reveled in the money and fame that came from being a world-class cyclist. And he was perceptive enough to recognize that Greg LeMond’s celebrity dried up the second he quit cycling. So Lance did everything he could to make his celebrity last.

First, he took PEDs so he could remain competitive, and then when he realized even PEDs would not keep him relevant forever, he founded the Livestrong Foundation. It brought him an entirely new source of fans and endorsement money. A source he thought would last a lifetime.

Lance has received world-class PR counsel over the years, and until recently it allowed him to stay in front of the rumors and accusations. But, for the moment, it has all caught up with him. Lance is a survivor, literally and figuratively, and I wouldn’t bet against the comeback for which he is desperately trying to position himself. But if his reputation does survive, don’t ever forget the one true thing about Lance: he is a terrible person.
