CPR Ramps Up Efforts to Crowdsource News

Colorado Public Radio is “expanding and intensifying” its effort to crowdsource some of its news, and it has hired pioneering multimedia journalist Lee Hill to lead that initiative known as the Public Insight Network. PIN “is an online tool used to gather perspective from the Colorado community,” and CPR is asking listeners to visit the CPR website to sign up to share their expertise about issues shaping Colorado’s future.

Turner PR Adds Brown Palace, Two Other Clients

Its been a good month for Turner PR. The agency has added some big names as clients, including Destination Hotels & Resorts, the Brown Palace HotelFilson, and the Society of American Travel Writers. Turner has been named agency of record for Destination Hotels & Resorts, the fourth largest independent hospitality management company in the United States with 38 luxury and upscale hotels, resorts and conference centers. And the agency will provide a variety of strategic digital communications services to the other three clients, including daily channel maintenance, social promotion strategy, influencer targeting, corporate blog development and integration among traditional PR and marketing efforts—events, optimized pitching and guerrilla promotions.

Catfight Alert: Aiello/Webb vs. Andrew Hudson

If you were getting tired of the Is-the-Michael-Hancock-story-really-a-story debate, good news. The proposed Gaylord Hotel development in Aurora is the newest catfight in town, and it is splitting Denver’s PR community. On one side are Wendy Aiello (repping Aurora) and Pete Webb (repping Gaylord). And on the other side is Andrew Hudson, who doesn’t want to see the Stock Show relocate from Denver.

And if you aren’t tired of the Michael Hancock debate, Big Media blogger Jason Salzman takes Denver media to task for running with a story that was broken by a guy using rampant rumors as a source.

GroundFloor Recognized at 2011 SABRE Awards

Congratulations to GroundFloor Media, which was recognized at the 2011 SABRE awards for its “Get Grounded” employee volunteerism and community giving program, as well as for work with clients Motive, Qdoba and “Complete College Colorado.”

GroundFloor received a certificate of excellence in the community citizenship category for its “Get Grounded” program, and was named a Gold Award finalist for its work with Moxie and Qdoba, and a Silver Award finalist in the government agency category for “Complete College Colorado,” a statewide education campaign for the office of former Colorado Governor Bill Ritter Jr. that aimed to raise awareness about the importance of a college degree.

Denver PR Jobs

Among those hiring this week are ABMP, the Colorado School of Mines Foundation, DaVita, Denver Health, GHX, Holland & Hart, Intermap Technologies, Mountain News Corporation, National Wildlife Federation, Peak Vista Community Health Centers, the University of Colorado at Denver School of Dental Medicine and the Yahoo! Contributer Network.

The Consequences of a One-Newspaper Town

I don’t know newly elected Denver Mayor Michael Hancock and I don’t know whether the allegations of his involvement with prostitutes are true. But I do know this: if the Rocky Mountain News were still here, we would have gotten to the bottom of the story much faster. I love the Denver Post, but I love a Denver Post being pushed by a competing Rocky Mountain News even more.

Denver PR Jobs

Among those hiring this week are Webb PR, Colorado Public Radio, the Alzheimer’s Association of Colorado, Crossroads Community Church, the Maternal Child Health and Healthy Baby Program of Weld County, the National Ecological Observatory Network, Peak Vista Community Health Centers, the University of Colorado at Denver and the University of Denver.

Linhart Wins [Insert Award Name Here]

Linhart PR won something like its 6,000th award of the year, this time being named one of the Top 50 small company workplaces in America as judged by Inc. Magazine and Winning Workplaces. Nearly 350 companies competed in the contest, and a national panel of experts in leadership and small to mid-sized business judged the finalists. Selections were based on specific metrics and qualitative assessments of the finalists’ success in creating the kind of workplaces that engage employees and deliver bottom-line results.

Moxie Rebrands

Moxie Media Group has rebranded itself as Moxie Creative Communications Agency in a move to distinguish itself from traditional marketing, advertising and PR firms. I’ve read the press release twice and I still can’t figure out exactly what is changing, so I’ll let Moxie speak for itself:

“Traditional advertising or marketing agencies are engaged primarily for their branding and marketing expertise, where their services are geared towards helping clients sell products and services to a specific target demographic,” said Mike Schrader, president, Moxie CCA. “While Moxie CCA is called upon to do the same, our clients’ communication challenges are increasingly centered on a need to communicate one or more messages to multiple target audiences across multiple communications channels. In these cases, we are helping our clients to determine the best way to communicate to their many constituents and then execute their campaigns accordingly.”

Dovetail Unveils New Website, Announces Pro Bono Client

Dovetail Solutions has introduced a redesigned website, and announced that its 2011 pro bono client is the Morgan Adams Foundation, which raises money and awareness on behalf of children affected with cancer. The foundation was started by the parents of Morgan Adams, who was a healthy 5-year old girl when she was diagnosed with a Glioblastoma Multiforme brain tumor in 1997. She battled her cancer for 11 months before she succumbed to the disease.

‘If You Give Me a Task, Don’t Expect Me Not to Succeed’

If you hate the stereotype that public relations people are soul-less, amoral drones who will say anything about anyone if a client or boss tells them to, you probably are not going to like Sue Skiffington-Blumberg (even if the Colorado Springs Gazette inexplicably does). According to a Gazette editorial, Skiffington-Blumberg and her public relations team at the City of Colorado Springs have spent the past several years publicly badmouthing their own city at the direction of her bosses in an effort to get a tax increase passed. As the Gazette noted, “The campaign may have cost our city countless tourists and jobs.”

So how did Skiffington-Blumberg justify her actions:

“Our strategic plan was to paint a picture of the dire straits of our city budget. If we could not do so locally, we would do so in the regional and national press … . I hated it. I grew up here. My family has been in this community since 1892. But when given a task, it is my obligation to get on board. If you give me a task, don’t expect me not to succeed.”

That quote is just chilling. And perhaps not just to me. Skiffington-Blumberg was forced by the city manager to resign yesterday (two days after the Gazette editorial appeared).

CPR News Team Recognized by Colorado AP Broadcasters Assoc.

Congratulations to the Colorado Public Radio news team, which won two first place and two second place awards at the Colorado Associated Press Broadcasters Association (CAPBA) annual awards event. “Colorado Matters” Host Ryan Warner and reporter Megan Verlee won first-place awards, and health reporter Eric Whitney and reporter Zachary Barr picked up second-place awards.

“We’re honored by CAPBA’s recognition of our new team’s achievements,” said CPR Vice President of Programming Sean Nethery. “Winning these awards helps reaffirm that we are fulfilling our mission to inform and educate listeners through in-depth local news coverage.”

Denver Public Relations Moves

  • Colorado Public Radio hired Jerry Brown as public relations manager. Brown replaces Lana Jefferson Taussig, who relocated to Nashville. CPR also hired Ben Markus as a general assignment reporter. Markus previously was with Hawaii Public Radio.
  • The Denver Museum of Nature & Science added Charlotte Hurley as public relations coordinator. Hurley previously was with Turner PR.
  • Armada Medical Marketing hired Amanda Brownlie as public relations account manager. Brownlie has worked primarily with orthopedic and internal medicine practices, as well as most recently with a health care consulting firm specializing in business intelligence.

Turner Wins One, Hires One

Turner PR has added Sandos Hotels & Resorts to its portfolio of hotel clients. Turner will provide strategic bilingual media relations for two of the growing hotel company’s Mexico properties including the Sandos Caracol Eco Resort & Spa and Sandos Playacar Beach Resort & Spa. Turner also announced that it has hired Ashley Cothran as an account executive. Cothran previously was with Aiello Public Relations and Marketing.

You Can’t Spell ‘Sinister Evil Plot’ Without ‘PR’

Are ethically challenged former journalists corrupting us virtuous public relations practitioners? And are political campaign-style dirty tricks becoming more commonplace in corporate public relations campaigns? Journalist Tom Foremski investigates scratches the surface.

UPDATE: GroundFloor Media’s Gil Rudawsky, a former Rocky Mountain News editor, argues that “all of us in PR will pay for (the Facebook/Google/Burson debacle) with a sustained black eye and a loss of credibility.”

DU Seeking PR Experts for Portfolio Reviews

The University of Denver’s Department of Media, Film and Journalism Studies is seeking a few experienced public relations practitioners to conduct an interview and portfolio review of DU students enrolled in a PR seminar course. The PR practitioners will review the students’ resumes, portfolios and interview skills, as well as provide critiques to help students prepare for real world job interviews. It is a good chance to identify potential interns (Weber Shandwick snagged two of the students last semester).

The reviews will take place next Tuesday, May 17, starting at 5 p.m. If you are interested in participating, please email Michelle Honald at DU.

Volume PR Sues Medical Marijuana Client

Goddamn pot-smoking hippies. There’s always money for a dime bag or a can of Pringles, but ask them to pay an invoice and its all, “Dude, chillax. We’ll hook you up when we can.” Or maybe it’s not like that at all. I’m just guessing based on the lawsuit filed against Greenway University by Denver’s Volume PR, parent company of the nation’s “first and only business development and public relations firm exclusively focused on the medical marijuana industry.” If you are interested, the case was filed in Denver County (#11CV1119).

Denver PR Jobs

Among those hiring this week are the Boulder Jewish Community Center, Colorado Christian University, the Colorado Hospital Association, Eaton Corporation, EBags, Jeppesen, onTarget Jobs, Outreach United Resource Center, The American Herbal Products Association, Ubee Interactive, Waste Management, Xcel Energy, KRDO NewsChannel 13 (Colorado Springs), and the University of the Rockies (Colorado Springs).

The expansion will include a second inpatient 12-story tower, increased patient care facilities to the Anschutz Cancer Pavilion and new parking structures for patients, visitors and employees. The entire project is scheduled to be complete by 2013.

Webb PR Dominates 2011 PRSA Gold Pick Awards

You have to hand it to Pete Webb. His team either does really good work or they really know how to fill out an award nomination (I’m guessing both). PRSA Starts Book Club for Young Professionals

Colorado PRSA’s Young Professional Development Committee has started a book club for young PR pros. To kick off the club, we will be reading fashion PR publicist Kelly Cutrone’s If You Have to Cry, Go Outside And Other Things Your Mother Never Told You.

“Known to those in the industry as the founder of People’s Revolution, Cutrone will be remembered to some as the tough boss to Lauren Conrad and Whitney Port on MTV’s The Hills. The book catalogs both her personal and professional successes.  Her advice is applicable for those in every business.  Helpful tips include: phone calls are better than emails, don’t blog about your job, and go outside to cry.”

5280 to Honor Denver Magazine Subscriptions

If you were wondering who was the winner in 5280’s recent acquisition of Denver Magazine, you can stop. It was 5280. Despite press releases touting print runs of 50,000 copies, Denver Magazine only had 3,000 paid subscribers. The remaining copies were dumped at local hotels and businesses. Here’s guessing 5280’s Dan Brogan got the deal of a lifetime. So much so that he has agreed to fulfill existing Denver Magazine subscriptions with 5280 issues as a goodwill gesture.

Denver’s economy must be improving because the wins keep coming. True Enough: The Second Age of PR

Columbia Journalism Review examines the state of communications and concludes that “the muscles of journalism are weakening and the muscles of public relations are bulking up—as if they were on steroids … the dangers are clear.”

“As PR becomes ascendant, private and government interests become more able to generate, filter, distort, and dominate the public debate, and to do so without the public knowing it. ‘What we are seeing now is the demise of journalism at the same time we have an increasing level of public relations and propaganda,’ (author Robert) McChesney said. ‘We are entering a zone that has never been seen before in this country.’ ”

Colorado Tourism Office Selects NY Firm for PR Work

Bad news if you were chasing the Colorado Tourism Office’s public relations/social media account. It went to New York-based MMG Mardiks, which has had the account since 2006.

“Over the past four years, we have developed an innovative, buzz- and business-building PR program in partnership with the Colorado Tourism Office,” said Charles Mardiks, managing director, MMG Mardiks. “We are thrilled to have the opportunity to build on this momentum and to continue to showcase this great state” that I fly over regularly on the Virgin Atlantic JFK-LAX redeye.

Great Moments in Public Relations

Freelance writer Luke O’Brien wrote an article for Men’s Health on UFC fighter Georges St. Pierre. A few months later, the magazine’s PR team pitched him the article he wrote.

Hi, Luke-

Men’s Health went behind the scenes of UFC welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre’s title fight with Josh Koscheck. In his April issue cover story, St. Pierre opens up to the magazine about acting as a trainer and a learner, always climbing to reach his goals. Would you be interested in running any of his quotes from the interview?

Luke’s response:

Sounds great. I’d be interested in interviewing the writer. Lemme know.

Luke
