‘Media on Twitter’ Database Moves to its Permanent Home

The “Media On Twitter” coalition – Digital Idea Media’s Melissa Hourigan, Elgin Community College’s Sarah Evans, Help a Reporter Out’s (HARO) Peter Shankman, FutureWorks’ Brian Solis, and TrackVia’s Ed Dunigan – announced today that the database has moved to its permanent home at http://www.mediaontwitter.com. The database has grown to nearly 1,000 reporters, editors and producers since it launched three weeks ago.

Andrew Hudson Sparks Debate with ‘Newspaper Tax’ Proposal

Andrew Hudson is out this week with a not-so-modest proposal to enact a Newspaper Tax to “to subsidize the operations of statewide and local newspapers.” To Andrew, propping up newspapers that are important to communities is no different than subsidies that have propped up Denver’s symphony, opera, public transportation system and NFL team. To get the dissenting opinion, check out the blog post from GBSM’s Steve Silvers, who argues that “the potential closing of the Rocky Mountain News represents the market-driven loss of a delivery product, not the wholesale elimination of news and journalism.”

Twitter Takes Down Johnson & Johnson

Johnson & Johnson brand Motrin got schooled in the finicky art of social media over the weekend when one of the ads it wanted to “go viral” did just that. Unfortunately, the conversation, which began on Twitter and spilled over into the blogosphere, focused on why the ad was insulting rather than clever.

By 8:30 last night, the Motrin website was down as the company removed the ad. Unfortunately for Motrin, the print executions will continue for another month before they cycle out.

Andrew Hudson Resigns Position to Focus on Jobs Site

Those of us who have been in Denver for a while have watched with amazement as Andrew Hudson built what started as a small email distribution list into the full-blown marketing jobs machine we now know as Andrew Hudson’s Job List. During that run, we have seen Andrew move from the Wellington Webb administration to Frontier Airlines to ARCADIS. Congratulations! Your Social Media Plan Meets SMAC Standards

Sure social media is interesting and can be effective. But it has been missing something. We had trouble putting our fingers on it, and then it hit us: it has been missing a regulatory oversight body. You know, an organization that can deliver the kind of standards that will prevent the confusion that has reigned over the industry. Now we all can know that blogs are Web 2.0, podcasting is Web 2.1, Vlogs are Web 2.2, Twitter is Web 2.3, etc. And because Richard “Head” Edelman is involved, we can be assured it will be “authentic.”

Is There a Denver PR Recession?

It is hard to tell exactly what effect the recession is having on the public relations industry so far. Like a lot of other economic bellwethers, the PR-specific information seems inconclusive and often contradictory. PR Week has speculated in the last few weeks that the economic fears have frozen employment at a number of PR agencies, but hasn’t yet resulted in significant layoffs. Locally, it is just as muddled.

One trend that may be an indicator, though, is that Andrew Hudson reports he is seeing an increase in the number of people posting to the “People for Hire” section of his Web site. Let’s hope that is just an indication of the continuing growth in the traffic to his Web site rather than a sign that more people are out on the streets job-hunting these days. If you are one of the ones posting to the site, there is some encouraging news: Andrew has been surprised by how many companies hire individuals based on their profiles. And if you plan to post your profile, be succinct. Says Andrew, “God rewards good writing, brevity and creativity.”

So, let’s all take a moment to silently thank him for creating his PR Jobs List, which is one of the greatest resources ever created for Denver PR people.
