Many of us who worked in Denver a decade ago remember the fight former Denver Post reporter Kerri Smith waged against obesity and cancer. Sadly, Kerri lost that struggle this weekend. She was 48. Mike McPhee at the Post has the details.

Kerri was a lovely person. She educated a community on a health issue (clinical obesity) that helped take the stigma and stereotypes off of overweight people. She did this by opening up to her readers with a very personal struggle in a very transparent and real way. I believe the chronicle of her struggle definitely helped to save lives. I was honored to read a proclamation from the Mayor at a forum the Denver Post held in response to the thousands of readers who followed her struggle. The Mayor proclaimed it “Kerri Smith Day” in tribute to her public service through journalism. Just another example of how journalism impacts our daily lives.
