Catfight Alert: FIFA vs. the Gay Community

Right now, gay rights groups are targeting Sepp Blatter, FIFA’s president, for his comments on how gays should behave at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. But it won’t be long until the groups turn their ire toward World Cup sponsors such as Coca-Cola, Budweiser, Visa, McDonald’s, Hyundai and Sony.

Imagine the NFL telling male football fans: “Don’t stare at the cheerleaders,” or “Don’t kiss your girlfriend in public.” I doubt anyone would call the resulting outrage a “catfight.” Stereotypes are difficult to erase – particularly when ignorance is so widespread and mainstream.

Actually, I would call it a “catfight,” but that is just because I have a long-running series of “Catfight Alerts” on this blog that chronicle various groups who are fighting (and putting personal or institutional reputations at risk).

But I agree that it is inexcusable that FIFA would award the World Cup to a brutal, repressive nation that criminalizes homosexuality. I can only hope that the sponsors get pulled quickly into this fight because FIFA seems to respond to only one thing: money.
